Lesbian

a term used to identify women who are sexually, emotionally, and spiritually attracted to other women.

Gay

a term used to identify men who are sexually, emotionally, and spiritually attracted to other men. It can also be a term used as an umbrella to describe any same-sex attraction regardless of gender.

Bi-Sexual

can describe either men or women who are sexually, emotionally, and spiritually attracted to both sexes.

Transgendered

describes someone who knows in their head, heart, and soul that they are not the biological gender which they were born. They can present it in their chosen gender.

Transexual

identifies someone who has the same attributes as above and may use hormones and/or surgery to alter their biological gender.

Two-Spirited

is a Western interpretation of an aboriginal term used to describe someone who fits under the umbrella of queer.

Intersex

describes someone who is born with attributes (wither chromosomal, gonadal, anatomical, etc.) that do not fit neatly within male or female categories.

Queer

is an umbrella term which has been embraced by some people in the community to represent the diversity of gay/lesbian/bi/trans people. It was a term that was used to 'hurt' and has been reclaimed to take away its damaging power. Not all gay/lesbian/bi/trans people have embraced it.

Questioning

is someone who is questioning their sexuality. This can be a confusing time at any age.

Asexual

is someone who is not attracted to either gender.

Ally

describes someone, generally straight, who is knowledgable about queer issues and adocates on their behalf. This could include interrupting homophobia, staying informed, using inclusive language, etc.
